The measles is an acute virus DISEASE and
is spread by airborne infection. Symptoms are
fever, small spots inside the mouth, and a
raised, blotchy red rash appearing for about
a week. Prevention is by vaccination. In
industrialized countries it is not usually a
serious disease, though serious complications
may develop. Third World children suffer a
high mortality, as did the North and South
American Indians, who died by the thousands
in epidemics of the 17th, 18th, and 19th
centuries. In the UK a vaccination can be
given by a local doctor, this vaccination
combines measles, mumps, and rubella.
A total of over 10,200 cases of measles are
reported every year.
